As a resident of Oklahoma, it’s crucial to be prepared for the severe weather conditions that come with Oklahoma Storm season. Here are some tips on how to prepare.
Oklahoma is located in the southern part of the Great Plains region, which makes it particularly prone to severe weather. Tornadoes, hailstorms, flash floods, and severe thunderstorms are common occurrences during Oklahoma’s storm season, which typically runs from March to June.

The first step in preparing for Oklahoma’s storm season is to create an emergency kit. This kit should include enough supplies to last for at least three days. Some essential items to include in your kit are:
Make sure that your emergency kit is easily accessible and that everyone in your household knows where it is located.

It’s important to have a plan in place for what to do in case of severe weather. Discuss with your family or household members where you will go if a tornado warning is issued. If you live in an apartment or mobile home, consider finding a nearby storm shelter or safe room. If you have pets, make sure to include them in your plan as well. Have a designated meeting spot in case you get separated and practice your plan regularly.
It is also wise to have a couple back up plans just in case something comes up or there is some reason that you cannot execute your main shelter plan. For instance, if your plan is to use your neighbors shelter in their garage along with them, and a dangerous storm appears out of nowhere, yet your neighbors happen to be out of town on vacation, rather than being forced to scramble and find a new plan in the moment of chaos, you can quickly move on to your second plan and not panic. Hopefully your plan A is enough, but backup plans are always wise.

During Oklahoma storm season, it’s essential to stay informed about weather conditions in your area. Prepare by downloading a weather app or sign up for alerts from your local news station or the National Weather Service. Make sure that your phone is always charged and that you have a backup charging device in case of a power outage. Our team here at Be Safe Storm Shelters is working on our very own Storm Weather Widget that we hope to host live here on our website 24/7 in the near future as a resource to stay informed constantly!
However, there are some great and reliable weather service channels and resources out there! We will list a few of our favorite sites and resources to keep up with Oklahoma Storm Season below:
These are not all of the available resources for staying informed during storm season, but just a list of a few of our favorites. Feel free to do your own research and comment on this blog post what your favorite source is!

Preparing your property before the storm season can help minimize damage. Trim any trees or branches that are close to your home, and secure any loose items outside, such as patio furniture. If you have a basement, make sure that it’s waterproofed and that any sump pumps are working correctly. Consider installing storm shutters or reinforcing your garage door.
Most importantly, if you do not already have one, installing a Professional F-5 Grade Tornado Storm Shelter can give you the greatest peace of mind as well as be the safest place possible to take shelter in case of a violent storm. There are several types of Tornado Shelters that you can install, with both above-ground and below-ground options. Check out some different options we have AVAILABLE right now: SEE SHELTERS

Review your homeowner’s insurance policy to make sure that it covers damage caused by severe weather conditions. Consider adding extra coverage for flood or tornado damage. Keep important documents, such as insurance policies and identification, in a safe, waterproof container.
We know times may be tough financially and it can be tempting to not add all the extra insurance policies to save money. However, if there is one area where buying the insurance policy and being prepared is 100% worth it, it is in getting insurance that covers storm damage. When you live in Oklahoma, you don’t want to risk it.

Lastly, but CERTAINLY not least, Keep Calm.
If a severe storm hits, stay calm and safe. Stay away from windows and exterior doors, and go to the lowest level of your home or building. If you’re driving, pull over to a safe place and stay in your car until the storm passes. Avoid crossing flooded areas and never touch downed power lines.
Oklahoma’s storm season can be unpredictable and dangerous, but being prepared can help you and your family stay safe. By creating an emergency kit, having a plan, staying informed, preparing your property, reviewing your insurance policy, and staying calm and safe during a storm, you can minimize the risks associated with severe weather conditions.

Oh my goodness what a shining example of why information is key! We live in tornado alley and have never heard any of this before! So scary to think we could be blown away in an instant! My entire family got wiped away in a flood when I was a child. So I am the only living person in my family now. I’m proud to say. So hopefully we don’t get blown away where we live now! I will definitely be getting one of these!
